How do I get started?
- Choose from 20 different styles of dancing from partner to individual,
from patterned to improvisational, from traditional to contemporary, and from
performance styles to social dancing.
- Another way of choosing your dance is by connecting to the community of
dancers that follow a tradition you are interested in such as American folk,
Puerto Rican, or close knit groups formed around Salsa or Tango.
- If you are not sure what style is for you, some studios give a monthly
pass to try out all the styles you want for one price.
- Sign up for a class at a dance studio, at a club, a recreation center,
or with a community of dancers.
- Plan some times to practice in a fun atmosphere. Studios have special monthly
or weekly dances sometimes with live music. Often a group will practice and
go out to a club together afterwards.
- Knowing other dancers is a great way to connect to the best bands, special
statewide dance events, and holiday celebrations.
DANCING TIPS
- Austin is known for great dance instruction so you must feel encouraged
after the first class. If not, talk to the instructor for tips and
get with a friend who catches on quicker than you. Usually it takes only a
simple shift of the body or attitude to get you back to the excitement of
dancing to the music.
- Remember everyone learns in their own way at their own pace. Some people
take more repetition; some need it explained in words; others rely on counting
or on bookmarking their position in space.
- Leading and following require a learning curve apart from knowing the steps.
Give yourself time and enjoy the process even if it goes against the grain
- If you have trouble with a step, stand next to someone who can do it better.
