Twitter conversation with belly dancer, http://mideasterndance.com/about-toha.htm I ask:Do you improvise? How do you listen? To the sound of God? She responds, “The music is so rich, you must listen deeply to illustrate it well.”
Here I am asking stupid questions. Where have I been at Middle Eastern dance performances? Yes, wowed by the focus on hips and torso. Yes, enjoying the celebration and the music.
So she sends me to this link http://www.jawaahir.org/AboutTheDance.htm
Here is what I should have known already–
“Unlike classical ballet, the point of Middle Eastern dance is not to move the body through space in patterns, but rather to embody the music.
The dancer literally embodies the music, as different body parts move to different rhythms
When it all works together, Middle Eastern music and dance are virtually inseparable art forms – the music drives the dance, while the dancer simultaneously influences the musicians.”
Thanks Toha
