Heard at The Pilates Studio Austin, “I could come here for the next 20 years and you would still find a way to improve my body.” Yes that is Pilates, but that comment was about an instructor, Arletta, who uses her skill as a dancer to explore the body in all its nuances and find the intricate connections to the next growth.
Besides the ability to explore to the nth degree, being a dancer gives Arletta the awareness of what the Pilates training means for the body moving through space. That means she is not seeing simply a Pilates task completed, she is seeing the body in a continuum of increasing ability to move in space. In other words, she knows what can come next after you learn the Pilates task. She has done it herself on the dance floor and taught others to not only move with power and grace but also with emotion and passion.
My learning this week was another example. Arletta used just the right words to take me to a new level. Those words were, “Let you breathing relax these shoulders and let them go down rather than trying to push them down.” This is classic dance awareness and use of subtlty as well as power to take a learning body to the next level.
Major shifts have been happening in my aging body, straightening up, balancing a shortened side, supporting a weak lower back, and learning to support knee and ankle movement with a strong core. In the process my shoulders and neck are having fits trying to adjust to all this change. Laying on my back doing leg lifts, I was struggling.
When she said simply, “Let your breath relax the shoulder, “ I went straight to heaven and my body understood a completely different way of moving. There were other dancer words too that helped. They were so helpful and so right on I can not even remember them, something like “floating,” or “melting.”
Dancers rule and in Pilates that is the rule.
